Burial Bags First Nomination For Mercury Music Prize

Dubstep producer Burial clinches his first nomination for the prestigious UK music award, the Nationwide Mercury Prize. His album ‘Untrue’ is a fresh breeze in an otherwise tame line-up.

With songs as anthemic as ‘Archangel’ and ‘Etched Headplate’, Burial’s second album has become a landmark for the relatively new Dubstep genre. ‘Untrue’ has the deep sub bass and edgy beats typical for Dubstep. But with its use of heavily treated vocals and cut up melodies, ‘Untrue’ goes far beyond any genre.

Burial lives and creates his music in Croydon, deep in the urban wastelands of South London. Even at his most mellow, Burial’s tracks are 100% urban: The click click rhythm of wheels on train tracks, the metallic echo of a closing door.

‘Untrue’ is a chilled out yet totally unpredictable trip. A true classic for the post-rave generation.

The album certainly sticks out a mile from the other nominations competing for the title of Best UK Album. Take a look at the list below:

Nationwide Mercury Music Prize 2008 - Nominations
Adele ‘19′
British Sea Power ‘Do You Like Rock Music?’
Burial ‘Untrue’
Elbow ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’
Estelle ‘Shine’
Laura Marling ‘Alas I Cannot Swim’
Neon Neon ‘Stainless Style’
Portico Quartet ‘Knee-Deep in the North Sea’
Rachel Unthank & The Winterset ‘The Bairns’
Radiohead ‘In Rainbows’
Robert Plant & Alison Krauss ‘Raising Sand’
The Last Shadow Puppets ‘The Age of the Understatement’

Interestingly, Radiohead received their fourth nomination to date. Despite it’s considerable popularity and positive critical reception, the band has not won a Mercury yet. 1997, 2001, 2003, 2008 - Fourth time lucky, maybe?

The winner of the Mercury Prize will be announced in London on 9th September 2008. Radiohead or Burial? The odds are probably in favour for the not so exciting soft-soul debut of Adele. In any case, my shouts go out to Burial.
