Eat Sugar Serve Up DFA Rock With Punky Edge
Eat Sugar combine the Disco Rock sound of Brooklyn label DFA with frantic Punk Rock energy. Check out the band’s sound on our free MP3.
Eat Sugar hail from landlocked Cincinnati on the Ohio and Kentucky border. This is Rock territory, so it is quite unusual to hear some dance grooves and synthesisers coming from there. Eat Sugar go one step further and add a good dose of campness to their brand of 80’s New Wave crossed with 60’s Garage Punk.
Eat Sugar are Aidan Bogosian on vocals, Mike McBride on synthesisers, Greg Poneris behind the drums and Jim Reynolds on bass and synths. Look Ma, no guitars. Their new seven-track EP ‘It’s Not Our Responsibility!’ is dues out on 1st September. Tuneraker brings you an exclusive sneak preview of the track ‘Pop Singer’ which was taken from Eat Sugar’s new EP. The band previously released a self-titled debut EP in 2007.
Fellow Ohioan and music head John Schmersal who found fame with indie rock acts Brainiac and Enon handled the production. Schmersal, whose band Enon has been active on the New York scene for almost ten years, brings an edgy, neurotic sound to the proceedings which give ‘It’s Not Our Responsibility!’ that New Wave, dancey Rock feel without sounding revivalist. A good reference point would be ‘Summer Song’ by DFA band Yacht. Incidentally, Yacht are another landlocked band that puts its own spin on a style of music typically associated with New York and it’s rich New Wave, No Wave and Disco history.
Listen here to the acerbic ‘Pop Singer’ and get a taste for the band’s upcoming EP. The cowbells and drums spell New York Disco Rock and the psychedelic keyboards add a 60’s Garage Punk feel. Just click play on the MP3 player below or go to our RSS feed to download the track for free.
