Read on for a preview of forthcoming releases on London’s leading Dubstep label Hyperdub. Check out new signing Cooly G who is expanding Hyperdub’s sound into Soca flavoured House territory.

South London producer Cooly G combines Caribbean Soca rhythms with deep House grooves. Think electronic Soca king Ghislain Poirier on a mellow tip and you get an idea. The A-side ‘Narst’ is a straight Soca dub instrumental with loads of neat percussion and that trademark Soca bass drum, forceful and driving but slightly off-kilter.

The big surprise for Hyperdub release is the B-side of Cooly G’s debut single, ‘Love Dub’, which is a smooth vocal track that brings me right back to UK Garage and Two Step days in 1998/99. Cooly G herself provides the vocals in a sultry after hours style over a deep Soca bass drum and some gentle Rhodes-style electric piano. This is one for Modern Soul lovers out there.

Switch to the second track on the B-side, ‘Love Dub Refix’, for a slightly fuller mix with a snare, added percussion and a more urgent feel. Great bar music.

Coming up next month on Hyperdub is a new three track EP by King Midas Sound , a project of Kevin Martin, better known as The Bug. The EP ‘Dub Heavy - Hearts And Ghosts’ is the first new King Midas Sound material since Martin’s collaboration with Dubstep MC LV on the sublime ‘Cool Out’ 12″ from September 2008 that also featured the Dabrye mix of ‘One Ting’ - A Top 10 single in the Tuneraker Year End Charts for 2008!

The new King Midas 12″ features a totally fresh Dub mix of ‘One Ting’ on the B-side, here called ‘Dub Ting’. Also check out the film music like ambient styles on the A-side, ‘I Dub’, and the second B-side track ‘Too Long Dub’, both tasters for the upcoming King Midas Sound album. Very mellow fare for the Dub heads out there. I can’t wait for the album, which is due later this year.
