Oasis win the Best British Band gong at the NME Awards 2009. Both Best Album and Best Newcomer go to US bands, the Kings Of Leon and MGMT respectively.
Oasis were nominated in seven categories and take home two awards: That for Best British Band and one for Noel’s ‘Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere’ as Best Blog.
The winners of the NME Awards 2009 were announced at the O2 Academy Brixton last night. Winners were voted for by the public and apart from the noticeably strong performance by US artists there were little or no surprises.
Where the NME Awards really excelled this year was in staging a couple of surprise one-off performances during the evening.
Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon stole the show with an acoustic rendition of ‘This Is A Low’ from Blur’s ‘Parklife’ album. It is still an amazing song 15 years after it was first released. The performance was even more poignant as this was the first time in nine years that former Blur guitarist Coxon and Blur frontman Albarn shared a stage. Coxon left Blur in 2002 and pretty much stayed clear of his former bandmates ever since.
Another one-off performance saw Glasvegas covering Elvis’ jealousy drama ‘Suspicious Minds’ with a little help from Florence Welch of Florence & The Machine.
Other highlight of the awards ceremony included Elbow padding out their new single ‘Grounds For Divorce’ with a 20-piece orchestra and Franz Ferdinand covering Blondie’s ‘Call Me’ with guest vocals by singer La Roux.
