The Cure Release Two More Singles Before New Album

The Cure have two more singles in the pipeline until they will release their new studio album in September. This will be the veteran New Wave acts first new album in four years.

The band that was influential in kick-starting the Goth style back in the 1980s has released four new songs spread over two singles since May, ‘The Only One’ and ‘Freakshow’. Two more singles are scheduled for July and August release.

The new, yet untitled album will be the band’s 13th studio album. To mark the occasion, all singles are released on the 13th and the album is due out on 13th September.

The sound of the new material released so far does not stray far from The Cure’s mid-to-late 1980s period, arguably the height of their popularity. If you consider Coldplay or, at a stretch, Radiohead, as the contemporary equivalent to The Cure, it’s interesting how far removed The Cure’s sound is at this stage. 20 years on and this band sounds almost exotic.

If you prefer the renaissance clarity of ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ or the baroque opulence of ‘Charlotte Sometimes’, you may find their latest single ‘Freakshow’ musically a bit bland. If you prefer The Cure of the ‘Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me’ period, this is just the tune for you.
