US Hip Hop Star Raps With Essex Duo

Rapper Pos Plug Won of US hip hop act De La Soul adds his rhymes to the new single by Essex boys Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip. ‘Thou Shalt Always Kill’ is a slick remake of a Dan & Pip tune from ‘07.

‘Thou Shalt Always Kill’ was a bit of an underground hit two years ago with Pip ranting on about the things he doesn’t like in contemporary culture. The remake is much poppier, editing Pip’s original rant down to snappy statements and adding some mellow rhymes by De La Soul’s Kelvin Mercer, aka Pos Plug Won. Genius - The music was always pretty bouncy and the new lyrics should appeal outside underground hip hop circles. Check it out below.

As much as I love the original, Pip came across as a bit like a grumpy old man in the corner pub. You know the drill, ‘everything used to be better in the olden days’. The De La Soul edit turns it into a song (almost) everybody can identify with.

Pos adds a few neat topical touches. Check the ‘Thou shalt not fx!$k with my money’ bit filmed in front of a branch of failed building society Northern Rock, the first UK bank to be nationalised during the continuing financial crisis.

The De La Soul edit will be available as download and on 7″ vinyl from 26th January. You can listen to both the original and the edit on Dan & Pip’s MySpace page.

‘Thou Shalt Always Kill’ also comes in remixes by Drop The Lime, The Losers, Friction & K-Tee and Playdoe/DJ Fuck. Check out the very Balearic flavoured instrumental mix, the Sunday Best Cosmic Dub. All remixes are available as downloads only, apart from a limited run of the Friction & K-Tee mix on single-sided 12″ vinyl.

Pos Plug Won’s appearance marks the start of a busy year for De La Soul. The trio is due to release it’s first new studio album since 2004 later this year.
