Timber Timbre - Timber Timbre

This is the perfect album for the wee small hours of the morning. Mellow, melancholic and spiced up by a soupcon of drunken late night madness, ‘Timber Timbre’ is made for after hours listening.

Timber Timbre is the project of Canadian songwriter Taylor Kirk and a handful of like-minded souls from the alternative folk scene. Read on even if you don’t like alt Folk, because Kirk is truly one of a kind. He brays like Tom Waits, moans like Southern Soul man ZZ Hill and packs the swagger of young Elvis - Smooth, but with a dark edge.

Yes folks, Kirk plays the Blues like a dark art, like he’s directing a Voodoo ceremony in a gator infested Louisiana lagoon. Read on even if you can’t stand the Blues, because Kirk is way too sly to play retro muzak. He dodges and dives styles with such a light touch that the album resembles a rollercoaster ride in slow motion.

Mind you, it’s most probably the sweetest, most chilled rollercoaster ride you ever had.

While the music might soothe you through the wee small hours of the morning, the lyrics are no candy floss. “I’ve tried to write happier, more positive songs and they all suck,” says Kirk of his third album to date. “It’s like an exorcism really - getting the bad stuff out.”

I unreservedly recommend this album to anybody who’s into Micah P. Hinson, Swamp Blues, Screaming Jay Hawkins, Sun Records, Tom Waits, Country Soul, 60’s film music and Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, the Hawaiian master of the ukulele. Yes, four million YouTube viewers can’t be wrong and Timber Timbre’s opening track ‘Demon Host’ packs the same goosebump factor as Israel’s cover of ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’, a perennial YouTube favourite.
