Actress ‘Hazyville’

An album full of warm, understated electronics calling up black and white Avengers TV sequels or Film Noir. One for all the Aphex Twin heads, Acid freaks and Dub steppers out there.

‘Hazyville’ is easily the most consistent and atmospheric electronic album this year. Darren Cunningham has put together eleven tracks of grainy mood music for rainy afternoons or late nights.

On one side Cunningham’s music is quaintly old fashioned. There is a warmth and playfulness to ‘Hazyville’ that shows a solid knowledge of electronic styles from way back. Tracks like ‘Doggin’, ‘Again The Addiction’ or ‘Hazyville’ wouldn’t sound out of place in one of the old Avengers sequels - the black and white ones with Diana Rigg and Patrick McNee - accompanying a mad robot chase through the countryside.

Cunningham doesn’t dwell on retro sounds. He’s equally at home on Grind and Dubstep territories, which shows on tracks like ‘Redit 124′, ‘Minced’ and ‘Green Gal’. On other tracks, Cunningham adds reference points to Detroit Techno, Chicago Acid and Deep House into his Dubstep rhythms and basslines. ‘I Can’t Forgive You’ and ‘Crushed’ are subtle balancing acts between the old and the new.

‘Hazyville’ is a highly listenable album full of warmth and engaging ideas. A must have for all fans of electronic music but also a strong recommendation for all of you who normally steer clear of it.
