‘Dead Zone Boys’ is the aural equivalent of driving through the night with your windows down, taking in the sounds spilling onto the sidewalk in front of a run down strip of shops.

Take a joyride through urban white trash America with Jookabox. Listen to the sounds coming from a thousand liquor stores, cheque cashing joints and convenience stores. Jookabox front man David “Moose” Adamson has seen it all first hand. Adamson grew up on the east side of Indianapolis, a place he describes as ripped apart by constant recession, pandemic homicide and racial tension throughout the ’90s. Unlike many of his peers, Moose decided to stick it out and stay, churning out Hip Hop tracks on primitive equipment to keep himself sane.

You still get a sense of Moose’s solid grounding in the cut and paste skills of the Hip Hop producer on ‘Dead Zone Boys’. But you also get a dazzling range of musical references from Blues and Folk to Punk rock and House music. It’s like a kaleidoscope of all the ethnic minorities, youth cults and styles picked up on a drive past a few blocks in Moose’s neighbourhood. Adamson injects a cartoonish sense of humour, freely peppering his songs with chipmunk style vocals .

On ‘Dead Zone Boys’, Jookabox’ third album, Moose’s former one-man project has grown into a fully-fledged band aided by drummer Ostry Okerson and members of Indianapolis Indie rockers Everthus The Deadbeats. The band underpins Adamson’s crazy sound collages and gives them added bite. ‘Dead Zone Boys’ is unashamedly poppy and quintessentially weird at the same time. This is easily Jookabox’s strongest album to date and a must for anybody looking for something a little bit different.
