Ladytron ‘Velocifero’

‘Velocifero’ is an album for all you old-skool Visage and Ultravox heads out there. It’s also worth a listen if you like CSS but want something with a bit more substance.

This is Ladytron’s fourth album and most complex album to date. It’s like the band picked the strongest bits off their previous three albums - Pop, Electroclash and Indie Rock - and knocked them into a new shape. The result will be familiar to those of you who grew up with 1980’s radio: Visage, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Simple Minds… you get the drift. It’s all swooning and swirling chords, icy vocals and mid- to uptempo dance beats.

Even the video for the new single - all black and white geometrical patterns - goes back to Visage and Ultravox days. Check it out below.

‘I’m Not Scared’ and ‘Ghosts’ - classic New Wave chord changes. ‘Deep Blue’ and ‘Runaway’ - pure Visage style pop. But, thankfully, ‘Velocifero’ is not a pure 80’s revival album. The way Ladytron tackle their songs shows that they have 20 years of other musical influences in their heads. That sound is very ‘now’. Just listen to ‘Black Cat’ and hear what Siouxsie or Sisters Of Mercy could sound like to a pair of 2008 ears: Nobody sounded that phat in the 80’s.

Ladytron are on tour this autumn. Check dates and buy concert tickets online!
