Liquid Liquid ‘Slip In And Out Of Phenomenon’

Name a band that spawned an old school hip hop anthem and a hip DJ duo. New York’s Liquid Liquid provided the bass line for Grandmaster Flash’s ‘White Lines’ and the name for the Optimo DJs.

Liquid Liquid invented the blueprint that inspired several dance scenes from Manchester’s Hacienda days to the New York sound of LCD Soundsystem and their DFA label.

Dry, highly melodic bass lines and layers of percussion are the trademark Liquid Liquid sound. It’s not quite Funk, a lot of New Wave and a teensy bit of Latin. It is a mix that sums up the elements that where around in New York clubs when the band created their classic recordings between 1980 and 1983.

Liquid Liquid’s sparse output of three 12″ EPs and one 7″ single was totally unique and never fully matched. The bassline on their song ‘Cavern’ was so popular with hip hop DJs, that rap label Sugarhill Records got their house band to cover it as basis for the Grandmaster Flash & Melle Mel hit single ‘White Lines (Don’t Do It)’. That was back in 83′, long before the days of sampling.

A word of warning: This is club music made by a bunch of hyper active New Yorkers. If you like your music without nervous bits, then this is probably not the right album for you.
