If you are in the mood for some fat dance rock to stomp your Converse to, then look no further. You get the Disco bass, the steady 4/4 drums plus some cool Glam Rock guitar riffs.

While the New Wave revival is still raging, Seb and his boys try a slightly different approach to making rock music for the dancefloor. They are going back to good old 1970’s Glam Rock a la Sweet, T-Rex and Suzy Quattro. Thankfully, Seb’s take on Glam has more in common with early Punk than some lame revival.

Sebastien Grainger used to be the drummer of Canadian Punk Funk duo Death From Above 1979. The duo broke up in 2006 after releasing one album, ‘You’re A Woman, I’m A Machine’, which reached Gold in Canada.

After the split, Seb assembled a full band and started a new career on the road. Welded together by a tough live schedule, Grainger - now on guitar and lead vocals - bassist Nick Sewell, guitarist and keyboard player Andrew Scott and drummer Leon Taheny have a tight sound that packs a punch.

Glam Rock is their sound, alright. In their best moments, The Mountains have a lot in common with seminal Fulham Punks The Lurkers, who played Glam for outcasts. Sleazy, sweaty stuff with great singalong choruses.

Check out the catchy ‘Love Can Be So Mean’. Jaysus, even the title sounds like a Lurkers flashback. The music, meanwhile owes a nod to the mighty Pulp of ‘Common People’ fame. Or listen to the equally cheerful ‘I Hate My Friends’.

Over the course of the album, The Mountains prove to be more than one trick ponies. Take the piano ballad ‘Love Is Not A Contest’ with its big Glam explosion in the middle. Or listen to the positively funky ‘Renegade Silence’ with its falsetto vocals and a very cool droning synth riff.

Even if you don’t like Glam or guitars at all, ‘Renegade Silence’ is worth a spin. That synth has more than a touch of Arthur Russell’s crazy Disco productions about it.
