Is it meant to be ironic? ‘Sexuality’ certainly is an unnerving timewarp back to the days of Soft Rock. Enter at your own peril.French artist Sebastien Tellier delves deep into the Soft Rock soundtracks of 1970s art house porn on his latest album ‘Sexuality’. Dominated by synthesisers with the occasional sprinkle of electric guitar, the 11 songs on the album would not be out of place on the score of films such as Histoire D’O or Emmanuelle.
The album was produced by one half of French dance duo Daft Punk, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. Don’t expect any similarities with Daft Punk’s output, however. ‘Sexuality’ is largely beat free, apart from the house-light rhythms on the single ‘Sexual Sportswear’.
It’s an album that works best as a concept piece: 11 tracks about sex sung and played in a style that has come to be commonly associated with sex on film. In fairness, it is a lazy, sexy sort of an album. But no track stands out as a particularly strong song. You have to check out Sebastien’s 2005 masterpiece ‘La Ritournelle’ on his ‘Politics’ album for that.
