Indie rock in the style of The Verve or Primal Scream is the new direction for Jason Pierce and his Spiritualized project. From boogie rock a la the Scream to string laden anthems a la Verve, it’s all here.
‘Sweet Talk’ is a classic Verve style indie anthem while ‘I Gotta Fire’ and the first single ‘Soul On Fire’ are rousing boogie rock numbers that could come straight out of the Primal Scream camp. All three certainly not songs in need of a dash to the local Accidents & Emergency department to get fixed up.
Staying with the A&E theme, there are darker sides to this album, like the ballad ‘Death Take Your Fiddle’. But Pierce’s voice, broken and frail as it may be, stays in control. Like the consumate entertainer that he is, Pierce takes you by the hand and leads you to the next, poppier number.
Pierce is a UK indie veteran who has been on the scene for more than 20 years. With the band Spacemen 3 he created an absolute classic, the meditative and uplifting guitar drone psychedelia of ‘The Perfect Prescription’ as far back as 1987. Spiritualized have been around in ever changing line-ups since 1990. ‘Songs In A&E’ is easily their most accessible and rewarding album in a long time.
