Tindersticks ‘The Hungry Saw’
You either love or hate Stuart Staples voice. Staples dominates this collection of melancholic tunes somewhere between Soul and the Walker Brothers with his theatrical, exaggerated vocals.
‘The Hungry Saw’ is a timeless pop album that could have been recorded anytime in the last 50 years. It’s the kind of pop that comes loaded with luxurious sweeps of orchestration, held on course by tight arrangements. At times the Tindersticks opt for a more intimate, brass-led sound reminiscent of the Soul of Wilson Pickett as on ‘Yesterdays Tomorrows’ and ‘E Type’.
The majority of songs, however, has more of a decadent chanson feel to it. Imagine the lush orchestral soundscapes of the Walker Brothers rubbing shoulders with the jangly pop of Lloyd Cole and you get an idea.
‘The Hungry Saw’ is a deeply atmospheric album. Calm, collected and easy to listen to if you don’t find Staples’ voice overbearing.
