Ting Tings ‘We Started Nothing’
Brash, noisy boy/girl duo that bridges the gap between indie and R&B. ‘We Started Nothing’ is quirky enough to appeal to fans of The Go Team but should be slick enough to please Beyonce followers.
The Ting Tings are Katie on vocals, guitars and keyboard and Jules on drums. Katie kind of dominates the overall sound, which gives the music a touch of 60s girl group magic. Just think Shangri-Las. The Ting Tings are not a retro band, however. This is pop for today. A bit more edgy than your typical radio fare, but unashamedly poppy nevertheless.
At times, the album bursts with a sense of urgency. The music heads among you may now point out that these Ting Tings sound at times not unlike revered cult bands such as the Slits and ESG. Just bear in mind that the Ting Tings sound is a lot more refined out of the starting blocks.
This album could grow on me. Or it could just sound daft and somewhat spent after the summer.
Nevermind, if you are looking for some fresh summer pop, start here. My listening tips are ‘That’s Not My Name’ and ‘Fruit Machine’.
Listen to ‘We Started Nothing’ and download the album from iTunes.
