Who would have thought that U2 can still surprise? Their new album ‘No Line On The Horizon’ rocks and even makes a nod to trendy alternative Folk, US style. Maybe not fresh, but certainly credible.
Honestly, this album is every bit as ‘rocking’ as Primal Scream’s last album ‘Beautiful Future’. No, actually, U2 make a better job of it here than the former indie darlings.
The first single ‘Get On Your Boots’ rams the message home with a pile driver beat and gnarly bass. Ironically, this is one of the tracks on the album produced by Canadian Daniel Lanois, a man not known for his hard rocking antics.
U2 keeps the tempo up on ‘Stand Up Comedy’ and the title track ‘No Line On The Horizon’. On the anthemic dance floor filler ‘Magnificent’ the band even breaks into a bit of Disco Rock that gives Franz Ferdinand a run for their money.
The other key producer working on the U2 album was Brian Eno, who contributed some crisp synthesiser themes that make U2 sound edgier than in a long time.
I swear Eno was behind ‘Fez Being Born’ with its Gospel vocals and dream-like atmosphere. This song is a dead ringer for Eno’s last album with David Byrne, ‘Everything That Happens Will Happen Today’.
There are some very Eno sounding synths on the two surprisingly folky tracks on the album, ‘White As Snow’ and ‘Cedars Of Lebanon’. These two plus ‘Fez’ are easily the most ‘out there’ tracks U2 have attempted in a long time.
‘No Line On The Horizon’, U2’s 12th album to date, is a return to form for the Dublin boys turned global pop stars.
