Weezer ‘Weezer’ (The Red Album)
The chief dudes of Slacker Rock return with a slab of pure pop. The band’s ‘Red Album’ looks set to crack the mainstream media before the summer is over.
Weezer still make mid-tempo Alternative Rock with walls of guitar noise. What sets them apart from the competition is their knack for churning out simple, addictive melodies. Oh, and their lyrics are still very much tongue-in-cheek.
This is the band’s third self titled album since their debut in 1994, the Blue Album, and 2001’s Green Album. All Weezer albums harbour a potential mega hit. The Blue Album had ‘Buddy Holly’, the Green Album had ‘Hash Pipe’ and the Red Album has… ‘Troublemaker’!
Producer Rick Rubin of Beastie Boys and Johnny Cash fame brought his bag of tricks to the studio when the dudes recorded the Red Album. The sound is solid but the album’s most striking feature is the songwriting. For the first time, all band members contributed material during the making of the Red Album.
All you Vans and Chucks wearing ex-skaters, this one’s for you. If you never owned a skateboard you will enjoy this too. If you are a closet Bon Jovi or Guns ’n’ Roses fan, go on and give Weezer a spin.
