Free Blood In ‘Royal Family’ Shocker
Boisterous, noisy dance music straight from the streets of Brooklyn, New York. Free Blood travel in the tyre tracks of No Wave mavericks like Liquid Liquid, Lydia Lunch and James Chance.
Free Blood are intense and edgy, but underneath the noise they lie down a tight groove. Their new single ‘Royal Family’ is ace dance music. But ever so often you will have to stop and ask yourself ‘whoa, what on earth was that just now?’. Totally mad stuff, really.
This Brooklyn duo is the latest link in a long line of fine New York showmen who stretched the Funk rubberband until it snapped. Ouch. Punk Funk in other words. James Chance and his Contortions, for instance, self-imploded but made some damn fine dance records like ‘Contort Yourself’ before they disappeared. Dito for Liquid Liquid.
Free Blood also manage to capture the ‘you-never-know-what-to-expect’ thrill that surrounded Lydia Lunch and her bands like Teenage Jesus & The Jerks and Snatch.
But, again, this is no history lesson. Free Blood are happening now.
Their new single ‘Royal Family’ has been picked up by DFA Records, home of LCD Soundsystem. Check out the video - All period costumes, dodgy acting and mad computers.
