Take A Rocket To The 40’s With Kitty, Daisy & Lewis

Are you ready to do the timewarp? These three teenagers from North London play dancehall music from the late 40’s. We’re talking jump blues and early rock n’ roll with a slick urban twist.

Kitty, Daisy and Lewis play the kind of urban dance music that started the rock n’ roll revolution after the second World War. Slick, sophisticated stuff with a tinkle of sex and a dash of wicked humour. Think Louis Jordan, the inimitable Wynonie Harris and Roy Brown.

The trio’s music smells of zoot suits, kipper ties and cocktail dresses. An unusual choice, as most rock n’ roll revival bands focus on a later period, when quiffed white guys from the country took over from the predominantly black, urban pioneers of rock. Visually, the three mix both worlds.

The range of instruments - including ukulele and xylophone - and choice of material put Kitty, Daisy & Lewis firmly into the night club rather than the roadhouse. There’s more than a touch of the novelty humour of Las Vegas club stalwart Louis Prima about them. They’ve been known to include Prima’s classic ‘Bouna Sera’ in their stage set. All good fun and slightly whacky.

If you like your rock n’ roll to wear a Perfecto or Buco biker jacket and smell of rebellion, you won’t get much out of this. If you are looking for something to get you in the mood for a night on the town, you’ve come to the right place.

The three siblings come from a musical family. Mum Ingrid, who helps out on bass, used to play in the seminal post-punk band The Raincoats and dad Graeme owns The Exchange, a well respected mastering studio in London.

Kitty, Daisy & Lewis sure do the 40’s thing down into the last detail. They play vintage instruments and record on old analogue equipment. You can even get their music on proper 40’s style 10″ 78 rpm records, if you are so inclined. But they do the more modern 12″ 33rpm vinyl and CDs as well.

The trio’s new single ‘(Baby) Hold Me Tight’ b/w ‘Buggin’ Blues’ will be out on BBC Radio One DJ Rob Da Bank’s Sunday Best label in the UK and Ireland on December 15. Some advance import copies are available on CD in the US now!
