The Week In Music - 23rd January 2009

There’s a couple of good songs around this week. Looks like individual downloads are in order. Antony & The Johnsons’s new album is interesting but you may not warm to all of it at first listen.

US singer songwriter Bon Iver aka Justin Vernon Bon Iver’s new mini-album ‘Blood Bank’ sees the US singer-songwriter trying out a few new directions. Some work, some don’t. UK hip hop duo Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip meanwhile have teamed up with hip hop legends De La Soul on a fun pop single.

My top three songs of the week are:

Dan Le Sac and Scroobius Pip team up with US Rapper Pos Plug One of De La Soul Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip feat Pos Plug Won ‘Thou Shalt Always Kill’ (De La Soul Edit)
Bon Iver ‘Beach Baby’
Bon Iver ‘Blood Bank’

Antony & The Johnsons release new album 'The Crying Light' Antony & The Johnsons released a new album this week, ‘The Crying Light’. If you loved Antony’s previous album ‘I’m A Bird Now’ then prepare for a slightly colder collection of songs. If you like a fuller, emotive sound, check out ‘Another World’ and ‘Epilepsy Is Dancing’ first. The rest of the album sees Antony exploring more minimal terrain, accompanied by piano and a small string section.

I think the new style sounds Antony’s voice very well, but some of you might find his new songs colder, more distanced maybe even artificial. ‘The Crying Light’ is certainly not a cuddly album.
