The Week In Music - 6th February 2009

White Lies get the public vote on tuneraker this week. We panned their debut ‘To Lose My Life’ but these lads are popular, no doubt. Lily Allen’s new album is more fun, but it has its flaws.

White Lies White Lies sound, and I’m trying to be objective here, like early U2 crossed with early Joy Division. A nice, dry bass that plays cool little melodies plus a guitar fed through a bank of effects and an urgent, emotive voice on top.

Not a bad sound and I can see how it would appeal to actually quite a wide range of listeners. Give it a try yourself. This might be a surprisingly long lasting Rock album.

Lily Allen Lily Allen the brat the tabloids love to hate is back with a second album, ‘It’s Not Me It’s You’. Lily herself is in flying form when it comes to singing about George W., drugs and Chinese takeaways. This could be a pretty fun album, if the music wouldn’t be so excruciatingly lame.

My top three songs of the week are:
Skream ‘If You Know’ - Deep, House inspired track with nagging vocal sample, off ‘Skreamizm 5′
Lily Allen ‘Not Fair’ - ok, I like the Plastic Country touch
White Lies ‘Farewell To The Fairground’ - The White Lies formula at its tightest: U2 meets 80’s New Romantic
